Feeling Peaky
Last weekend (8th-9th) the Leeds Uni Climbing Club headed over the Pennines to the Western Peak, for a weekend of easy trad and teaching people to lead. We forged on down the M60 in spite of the terrible weather forecast, and much to my surprise, we got a decent day's climbing in on saturday and it didn't rain a drop. In fact, the two that I were climbing with both did their first trad leads; it's great to be able to help people to progress like that!
We cooked again for all the people on the trip, although I didn't help quite so much this time, since veg curry is more Si's thing. I did do loads of chopping of course. It went down well all round though, and after the usual tinnies, card games and banter, we all headed outside for a few fireworks before going to the pub. We headed down to a pub called the Oddfellows, just down the road from the Scout Hut we were staying in. As usual they were pretty accommodating when we turned up to give them their fortnightly turnover in an evening, but they really went beyond the call of duty, finally having a lock-in, with the last of us (myself included, naturally) at about 2.30. I also had several conversations with the local old blokes who were propping up the bar, who said that the Cardiff club drank more than us (the shame) but they smelled worse too.
The next morning, after I'd apologised for deflating somebody's air-mattress (it had seemed like a good idea the night before, after a fair few pints!) we decided that the weather was looking to bad to head outside. So we ended up at Marple climbing wall, which was a laugh, but a bit disappointing. We drove home through torrential rain, had our usual curry at Nazams, and hopefully a good time was had by all. I know it was by me!
