Tulum – Chitchen Itza
Today we got a bus to Chitchen Itza at two thirty, which gave us time to check out Tulum's ruins before we left. I woke up relatively early, and went to find a hammock while Nicky slumbered until about ten. We packed up and got a taxi to the ruins, leaving our bags at the cabañas. The ruins, it turns out, weren't really walking distance as the owner of the huts had told us, so we were glad that we got a cab. There wasn't really that much to see at the site that we hadn't seen already. The ruins were nowhere near as impressive as others we had seen, and the beach was just the same beach as we had outside our door at Papaya Playa. Nonetheless, we spent about forty minutes there, and saw some huge lizards as well as some annoying Americans.
We returned to the huts, much to the owner's surprise, and were soon on our way to the town to get our bus. We were very early, but there wasn't much else to do. We ended up eating a lot of chicken, having a milkshake, and as usual spending far too long at an internet café. We finally got on our bus, and a few hours later we were in Chitchen Itza. The temple itself closed at 5, and since we didn't arrive until half past, we had to just find somewhere to stay the night and pass the time. Luckily, we found a very nice, very cheap place, with a good, homely restaurant attached, and were soon installed with a few beers listening to the Beatles. Even though the beds were just plain strange, we decided to retire pretty early and hit the temples early tomorrow before the hordes of tour groups arrived, so once again we were early to bed and early to rise.
